• Hi, I’m about to start djing and After a bit of probing, the DDJ-ergo limited edition is £429 with traktor Le2.

  I can also get a second hand traktor s4 that is in full working conditions for £450 and then postage and packaging.

  What would you recommend I buy? I don’t want to get equipment that I will need to upgrade when I gain more knowledge/skill djing but I don’t want to pay that bit more if I can get the same out the ergo.

  Please, what would you all recommend an why? The price gap isn’t that different but being a student I have to be more conscious about how I spend my money sadly!

  I would recommend the s4, if you can get it for that price and the traktor software is included.
  I own the S4 and can’t imagine using traktor with any other controller.
  The s4’s set up is a lot better for traktors work flow, and you have a 4 channel mixer. ( I didn’t think i would need the other two on the deck, but trust me, it comes in handy.)

  So my opinion is, that if the 2nd seller is giving you Traktor pro 2 with the S4 then take it, $20 extra dollars for Pro over LE is well worth it. But if the seller is not willing to give you Traktor Pro 2 then i would recommend looking into the S2, same price if not cheaper than the ergo, and is designed much better for traktor.

  Breakdown time:
  So as J-Duffin said before, the S4 is made with Traktor in mind. Traktor is mostly based toward EDM and controllerism with its multiple high quality effect banks, advanced looping controls, and many cue functions. It is a complex machine and can take some time to get used to if it is your first controller. However, it is EXTREMELY powerful with all of the functionalty built in to the controller and the software. There isn’t any learning curve with the controller to software because everything thing on the controller looks exactly the same on the software. Much like Mac apps, its made with to operate best with a certain set of hardware. It is really quite intuitive, IF you can get over the learning curve of Traktor(all considering you haven’t used it. If you have, THIS IS THE ULTIMATE TRAKTOR CONTROLLER!).

  Now the ERGO may look kinda childish with all of its lights and shiny things, not to mention it has more plastic than Dolly Parton’s face, but that doesn’t mean its a child’s toy. This thing has a fully featured FX panel, much like the S4 and S2, a cue section, and a sample bank. The only thing it is missing compared to the S4 is the detailed looping segments and it has a 2 channel mixer instead of a 4 channel mixer. Another thing it is missing is size and weight (this is a good thing). Compared to the massive S4, you can drag this from venue to venue pretty easily. Its no Vestax Typhoon, but lugging it around isn’t going to be as arduous as a task. Also, it has a convenient laptop port so you can tuck your laptop underneath it so you can focus on the music. Also, because it is raised off ground, your controller isn’t going to get completely ruined if some idiot comes in and “spills” his “adult beverage” right next to it.

  If you don’t like the price of the S4 compared with the functionality of the ERGO, you might want to look into the S2. It effectively shaves off most of the unnecessary things from the S4 and puts it into a much thinner, smaller, lighter, not to mention less expensive, 2 channel DJ controller. Also, factoring the cost of the upgrade to Traktor pro from the ERGO could put you back quite a bit of cash in comparison.

  I wouldn’t really recommend the ERGO or WEGO to anyone. In my honest opinion, there are many better controllers at their price point.

  Yeah, Ergo vs S4 – there shouldn’t even be a debate over this. A no brainer really.

  For starting out and wanting to use Traktor their are not many controllers better then NI S2/4 series. SO for me it’s also a no brainer

  S4 for sure. I have an S2 and love it! If I could get an S4 for cheap I would jump on it. 🙁 But hey the only thing I’m really missing is decks C+D and I’m going to get a F1 or midi fighter 3D for those anyways.

  That is a question we can’t really answer, because Traktor and Serato are so different, you have to find what would be best for you, and your style of DJing. Someone might say Serato is the best, but it might not be what your looking for, so do the research on both, and decide which one would best suit you before making your choice.

  Exactly! 🙂 I started on VDJ and it got me through the basics. Then I tried serato and it just didn’t jive with me. Then i came to Traktor and fell in love. We have been happily married for 3 years lol
